Oasis of the Seas

Royal Caribbean has a long tradition of presenting important art collections on-board their ships as part of the overall cruise experience. Oasis of the Seas has a unique art collection. Mariangela Capuzzo, as Artistic Director and Lead Curator of the project, got interested on a particular wall installation that was being exhibited at the gallery. But she had a vision that would optimize the presence of the piece on the space. We worked together not only with her ideas, but in terms of the ship’s safety requirements when it comes to materials. For example, the original piece was mostly on Plexiglas™, a fire hazardous matter for the specific location of the artwork. We worked around it and re conceptualized the piece to make it on tempered glass instead. We also altered the format of each component and edited out some of the images to make it work for the space. The result was amazing!. The six piece wall installation is called “Love of a Poet” and it is inspired on a 17th century Chinese love story when women struggled achieving freedom and identity in a society that was both male dominated and rigid in its gender expectations.
